A New Gateway

Design Statement

The ‘new gateway’ site is located on one of the busier junctions within Aberdeen. The holburn roundabout acts as one of the main entrances into the city and has a constant flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The fast pace is able to provide a suitable and beneficial living location for the working professional.

This scheme aims to provide a social and luxurious style of living within this urban site. The intent of the design proposal is to create a dramatic approach as you enter into the city, as well as a strong presence within the immediate and surrounding context. The scheme consists of two main tower blocks that are connected on a public level at the ground floor, and a more private level at the first floor.  This proposal focuses on creating a social connection within the residents of these tower blocks. This is created by the bridging element that acts as an outdoor roof terrace, as well as bleed out spaces for the gym, and cafe.

On the ground floor level a through route is created to facilitate the main pedestrian route around the site, as well as creating a further social connection with the passing public. Within this level, the pedestrians will pass through a street, which has a variety of commercial spaces available, including a cafe, restaurant and gallery spaces.  These gallery spaces are included with the opportunity to be used as a start up unit for the working professional residents of the building, which can help to publicise ongoing business.

The building also offers a series of open plan meeting spaces which can be hired out or used as individual working units. This design has a very distinct appearance with the emphasis of verticality that is explored with the exterior fins. These fins are angled in a manner that directs pleasant views to the south, as well as creating a level of privacy from the adjacent tower.  This luxurious development will help provide a positive and vibrant impact on the site and the surrounding city centre.
